Loam consists of a mixture of sand, silt and clay that can be present in different concentrations. Our loam contains at least 50% clay. It is well suited to planted aquariums because it can hold nutrients for plant roots.

Loam has the property of storing ions and plants can absorb what they need from this buffer as needed. Loam also removes the surplus of ammonium and potassium from the aquarium water and thus prevents certain algae from gaining the upper hand.

Tip: You can knead liquid aquarium fertiliser into the loam before rolling it into balls. This way you increase the fertilisation capacity considerably. For a ready-made mixture of loam and other nutrients, see our clay ball mix.
Sprinkle a thin layer of loam over the bottom when starting your aquarium, before adding the top soil layer. As a guide, 200 grams is sufficient for an aquarium of 250 litres.

PLEASE NOTE: Loam that is not covered by another substrate such as gravel or aquarium sand will cause strong clouding of the water. Fine clay and silt particles quickly disperse through the water.

Too thick a layer of loam can cause the soil to silt up. As a result, there is poor gas exchange and too little oxygen in the substrate. Never apply a thick, continuous layer of loam over the entire surface of the soil.

A thin layer greatly reduces this risk, which is why we sell loam in small portions.
